Ceviche Old St Ambassador Review

"Pisco sours, punchy flavours, and picarones to die for: a delightful introduction to the flavours of Peru"

★★★★☆
Walk into Ceviche Old Street and you understand exactly what inspired Martin Morales to open up his third Peruvian restaurant, in the old Alexandra Trust Dining Rooms building right off City Road.

The location is great; the space is roomy; and building has the character and lighting of a proper establishment. The interior is tactfully classic, filled with references to Morales' Peruvian heritage, and all in all, the atmosphere sets you up perfectly for your first gulp of a smooth Pisco sour (£5 during happy hour, at 5-7PM on Sunday to Friday).

The food is equally impressive. The chilli and lime tiger's milk in the Peruvian ceviche (£9.40) packs a zesty punch, which goes beautifully with the hearty crunch of the cancha corn nuts and the tender sea bass in their eponymous fish dish.

The crispy pork shambar (£11) smashes any crackling on a Sunday roast out of the park; and the cassava chips (£4.8) make sure that even if you go for smaller tasting dishes, you definitely won't be left hungry.

For pudding, the traditional doughnut picarones (£5) are genuinely so good that we had to order them twice. If you're not one for sweet things, the drinks menu has a handsome list of cocktails with a Peruvian twist, with the wide selection of Pisco on display making it clear that the barman means business (cocktails are £7-8). I find it hard to believe that with the Stevie App, you can get a free bottle of house wine (worth £19.99) when you spend just £30!

With at least two Vegan or Veggie dishes in each menu section and a number of GF dishes throughout, you can happily get dinner with a big group knowing that there'll be something for everyone. The service is great with friendly and attentive staff; the food comes promptly; and the open kitchen adds to the authentic atmosphere while you wait.

Yes, the prices match the quality, so it definitely isn't the cheapest eat in this part of town, but the ceviche, setting, and service make it an unmissable introduction to the punchy flavours of Peru. That, and the picarones.
